Book Description

The first example 1 will quickly show you (by full example) how to create a fully functional Telerik RADGRID with CRUD (Select, Insert, Update, Delete) using Microsoft SQL Server 2008/2012, ASP.Net 4.0/4.5. This example includes every single line of code that is required to execute. The decision to write this book came from shear utter frustration with finding real usable solutions on Telerik's website or online period. The goal is to save the next person from this same frustration and from wasting endless hours searching online for a simple solution. Time is money and you can never replace time but you can replace money. Which is more important to you? Most real world .NET development projects do not allow a developer to click wizards and create an application, based on requirements, by the private or government sector. In order to be a professional .NET developer in these situations one must be an expert with all aspects of code in ASP.Net. That is with the language you are programming, the declarative markup code, and the SQL language for the database. One must also understand the definition of each of the property setting used for each user control. In additional to the classes that define each user control. These are the prerequisites for becoming a successful professional .NET developer.

Introduction

Let's Get Started

Our example will use master pages.  Master pages change the dynamics of ASP.Net development.  Most examples do not use master pages.  Unfortunately when you are tasks a real world project the first problem you have is a master page.  So how do you translate your textbook example with no master page to a real world problem with a master page?  It will require a half a day searching Google online which will only frustrate you.

Many cases you will just have a connection string to use.  You will most likely not have a fancy database that you can link to and use this nice textbook example.

Code by Example is a way of life.  Let dig right into the code without wasting any time.

RadGrid Example 1

The following is a full example that demonstrates the powerful out of the box CRUD (Select, Insert, Update, Delete) functionality of the RadGrid.  It is necessary to make sure that this code is fully understood.  Afterwards, moving on to more advanced examples will be a breeze.  We will review the application screen by screen first to understand what we are building, then break this example down by first examining the markup code, then the code behind, and finally the web.config.  We will also identify the most critical markup tags and properties get a clear understanding of their purpose.

Let see the new advanced features in action first

The screen below in Figure 7. Example 1 Main screen demonstrates the select command in SQL which loads the data from the orders table into the RadGrid from the Northwind database.  From this screen you have the options to add a new record, edit a record, delete a record, navigate through pages of records, refresh data, and change the number of records returned in each page.
